Buddha is placed at the centre of the Thangka surrounded by 12 masters. Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, is depicted seated in the earth-touching bhumisparsa mudra, holding an alms bowl in his left hand. He is accompanied by his principal disciples, Sariputra and Mahamaudgalyayana, who each hold a khakkhara staff and a black alms bowl. Surrounding them are the Sixteen Arhats.

Buddhas are characterised by thirty-two major and eighty minor physical marks, based on the Indian description of a Universal Monarch. Commonly depicted marks include the ushnisha at the head, the urna between the eyes, three lines on the neck, and a Dharma Wheel impression on the palms and soles.
