Her name means "one single birth" in Sanskrit, and she is believed to have originated from the pre-Buddhist Bon religion in Tibet. Legends say she was born from a tear of Avalokiteshvara and symbolises feminine enlightenment. She may have also been a human who gained spiritual power. Depicted with wild hair, she represents unbounded nature and is linked to meditation, which helps transcend ego for enlightenment.
